Arcadia ProT5 Lighting Kit in Hognose Snake Enclosure

1. UV Index and Lamp Selection:

  • It's important to use the correct lamp for your species. The UV Index should align with the species’ requirements, which can vary depending on the enclosure height, basking spot, and whether a mesh lid is in place (since it can block around 30% of UV light).
  • A Solarmeter 6.5 UV Index meter is recommended to accurately measure UV output and ensure it matches the needs of your reptile.
  • Below are two examples of UVB choices for a bearded dragon (top image) versus a ball python (bottom image). The bearded dragon needs full sun basking whereas the ball python needs much less. For more information about your specific species' lighting needs, refer to Arcadia's lighting guide here: https://www.arcadiareptile.com/lighting/guide.

2. Basking Area:

  • The basking zone is where UV and heat converge, and it should be the area with the highest UV Index.
  • Careful attention must be paid to the distance between the lamp and the animal’s head when it is resting in the basking zone to ensure the UV output is correct.
  • Decorations and climbing apparatus in the enclosure should allow the animal to access this area naturally without lowering the lamp into the enclosure.

3. Light and Shade Method in the Enclosure:

  • The "Light and Shade Method" refers to a setup that allows the animal to move freely within the enclosure, finding areas of varying UV levels.
  • The animal can move closer to the basking zone for warmth and UV exposure or into shaded areas to cool off and regulate its UV and heat exposure.
  • The setup should allow for easy movement between these zones, with the basking zone typically covering only a portion of the enclosure (half to two-thirds).
  • It's crucial to ensure the animal cannot access a UV Index higher than the recommended maximum for its species.

    4. Maintenance:

    • Regular monitoring with a Solarmeter is recommended to ensure that the UV output remains consistent, as lamps can degrade over time.
    • Lamp positioning and reflector quality play significant roles in maintaining the appropriate UV exposure.
    • We recommend changing your bulbs annually.

By following the guidelines and continually monitoring the enclosure’s lighting conditions, you can create a healthier environment that supports the animal’s natural behaviors and energy needs. The light and shade method ensures they can regulate their exposure to UV and heat just as they would in the wild.
